Spring Oscillation Experiment

Camp Reflection With assignments finished, the Year 8’s finally headed off to camp, to Levuka. Levuka was the first capital of Fiji, holding a lot of cultural and historical significance. Our camp commenced from the 13th of March, Tuesday, to the 17th of March, Saturday. Along with our Year 8 teachers, we also had Ms. Regina, two security guards, the school nurse and the school librarian accompanying us. We did many activities whilst on camp, including climbing up the 199 steps, visiting PAFCO, which is the main tuna industry, learning about the history and origins of Levuka and getting to know those in the school which we were staying next to. We had the opportunity to interact with the students in the school, as well as play sports with them and sing songs with them. In groups, we decided on what type of meals we wanted to prepare throughout the 4 days we were on camp. We were required to cook twice throughout the duration of camp, as well as clean up and wash up twice. Along with planning out meals, we were required to buy all the ingredients which were needed in order for us to make the actual food. One of the activities that I enjoyed on camp was the picnic we had in the local tourism business. It gave me the opportunity to interact with more of my peers, and get to know the people around me better. Visiting the local tourism business was also a great opportunity to get an idea of how tourism works in Levuka, and a great opportunity to explore Levuka. I enjoyed getting to know my peers throughout the duration of camp, by playing card games with them, cooking, playing sports and having conversations. I enjoyed being able to interact with the students from the local school beside us, as we visited the school and sang songs with the students, as well as participated in their athletics inter house. We were all encouraged to participate even if it meant that we had to come last. Although, it was a fun experience and gave us the chance as Year 8’s to act as role models around the children and represent our school. One of the things I found the most challenging was having to deal with the weather and heat in Levuka. It almost felt as it the heat in Levuka was twice as hot as it was in Suva. Whenever we did any outside activity, I found it hard to be able to cope with the amount of heat which was hitting me. Within minutes of being outside, I would be incredibly tired of the heat as well as grumpy because it really didn’t make me feel good. With the heat, came having to stay hydrated all the time, since I was sweating quite a bit. That was also another challenging aspect I faced, as I don’t always remember how much water I have to drink despite the weather. In terms of what I did well, I think I worked with my cooking group really well. I got the chance to really bond with my cooking group, and get to know the peers who were in it a lot better. When it came to preparing our first meal, which was breakfast, my group did very well and we worked nicely together. When we cooked our second meal, which was dinner on the last night of camp, we did even better because many of us prepared the ingredients which were needed and when it was time to cook the meal, I was able to work really well with the members of my group. There were two other members who helped me in cooking the meal specifically, but each and every member helped in preparation and cleaning up. We all contributed to what we were required to do, and we all shared equal amounts of tasks. Something I could have done better was made sure that every single member did their share of work when it came to our washing up time slots. A few of the people in my group didn’t do what they were supposed to do, so I think we all could have been a lot more organized and focused on being considerate and helpful towards each other because one person could not have done everything by them self. I could have made sure that each group member was allocated a task to do whilst we were cleaning up as a group so nobody was clueless on what they actually had to do. Being organized could have also helped us be a lot more stress-free, and would have allowed us to finish things quickly, because then each member of the group would of had something to do. Throughout this entire camp, I have learnt that I am quite good at being able to communicate with those around me, as well as having the ability to form a deeper bond between my peers and I. I have learnt that I am able to adapt to changes which could be made during camp. I have learnt more about how people treat those around them, and how they express themselves. I have learnt more about cooking, even though it is something that I already love and something which I do on a daily basis. I have learnt about a few more other techniques that comes with cooking, and preparing great meals for other people to enjoy, I have learnt how to cook for large quantities of people, which is something that can be really hard to do at times. What I have learnt about others it that each person has a different form of diversity, and each person has their own ways of expressing themselves. I have learnt more things about peers which I didn't normally interact with, like what their opinions were on certain things as well as how they treated those around them. Overall, in conclusion, this camp was an amazing, fun-filled experience which opened my eyes up to many things, such as having to cook my own meals within a group, washing up after meals and going shopping for groceries. These things were great experiences as they gave you an idea as to what you would do once you were out in the real world as an adult and even whilst you are growing up., transitioning into a young adult. I was able to bond greatly with my peers, which is always a great thing, since you get the chance to converse and speak to people who don’t speak to everyday. I have gotten a glimpse of the history of Levuka, which was very interesting, and have gotten to know the local children from the school beside us. I would definitely recommend that the next Year 8’s go on the same camp, because it was a great experience. Hena Dass |
